What is the Early Years Learning Framework?
ANSWER
The Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) is part of the Australian Government’s National Quality Framework for early childhood education and care. It lays out the principles, practices and outcomes that are deemed essential to a young child’s learning from birth to five years of age, as well as their transition to school. The framework emphasises the importance of play-based learning, and recognises the importance of communication and language (including early literacy and numeracy) and social and emotional development. The framework also describes five learning outcomes: Children have a strong sense of identity. Children are connected with and contribute to their world. Children have a strong sense of wellbeing. Children are confident and involved learners. Children are effective communicators.
What is the National Quality Framework?
ANSWER
The National Quality Framework (NQF) is an initiative by the Australian Government designed to bring consistency to the level of quality of early learning and care across Australia in the critical areas of education, health and safety. Introduced in January 2012, the NQF also provides clear and comprehensive information for families so they can choose the services best suited to their child. The main reforms implemented through the NQF are: Curriculum guided by approved learning frameworks such as the EYLF, outlined above Improved staff-to-child ratios New staff qualification requirements New quality rating system New national governing body (ACECQA) The NQF also introduced seven quality standards, which a centre is rated upon. These are: The centre’s educational program and practice Children’s health and safety The physical environment Staffing arrangements Relationships with children Collaborative partnerships with families and communities Leadership and service management
Why are the first five years of my child's life so important for learing?
ANSWER
Recent research has shed light on the impact the first five years of a child’s development can have on the rest of their lives. We now know, for example, that 90 per cent of a child’s brain is developed by age three, and that children who get a good start stay ahead and keep accelerating beyond the abilities of their peers. As children get older, it also becomes harder to close the gaps between those who are excelling and those who are lagging behind. It’s therefore imperative to make the right choices for your child during these early years, in so doing, giving them the best possible opportunities for their future.
